Certified Natural by BDIH – How good is that?

Choosing a skin care product can be daunting. They all seem to shout “green!”, “natural!”, “sustainable!” How do we, as consumers, truly know if the product we are buying is as “natural, green and sustainable” as it claims to be?
One simple test is to look for certification by a reputable accreditation body such as BDIH, the German Association of Industrial Companies and Trading Firms for pharmaceuticals, healthcare products, food supplements and personal hygiene products.

Established in 2001 BDIH’s purpose was to develop an industry standard by which products could be certified as “natural” and, subsequently, monitor and certify compliance to the standard. Certification by BDIH ensures participating manufacturers are held accountable to a strict standard that is highly regarded internationally and, importantly, enables consumers to avoid purchasing and using unauthenticated products that claim to be natural but, in fact, may not be. Since its establishment BDIH has certified over 9,000 products including Living Nature’s skin care and mineral makeup ranges.

Living Nature is proud of its association with BDIH. When we state Living Nature’s natural skin care and mineral makeup is “100% natural” we have BDIH’s certification to prove it. And, most importantly, our customers know Living Nature is not just ‘possibly’ safe, or 'mostly' natural – it is the real deal – 100% natural.

Now, thanks to a desire for even greater standardisation, transparency and accountability the European cosmetics standards certifiers community has developed a new standard that will further benefit consumers. The “COSMOS Standard” has been developed by the major European certification bodies BDIH (Germany), BIOFORUM (Belgium), COSMEBIO & ECOCERT (France), ICEA (Italy) and SOIL ASSOCIATION (UK) to define minimum requirements and common definitions for organic and natural cosmetics.

The new COSMOS Standard will be fully implemented by 2017. It applies to cosmetic products marketed as “organic” or “natural”. COSMOS certification covers:
  • Origin and processing of ingredients
  • Composition of total product
  • Storage, manufacturing and packaging
  • Environmental management
  • Labelling and communication
  • Inspection, certification and control

As a consequence by 2017 Living Nature’s range of skin care and mineral makeup will no longer be “certified natural by BDIH’. Instead they will be either “COSMOS certified Natural” or “COSMOS certified Organic”
